Cal Baseball Falls, 4-1, at No. 9 Oregon

EUGENE, ORE. -
No. 9-ranked Oregon broke open a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning with three runs off of California junior right-hander Logan Scott, topping the Golden Bears, 4-1, Friday night at PK Park in Eugene. Cal, which was limited to five hits off of Duck senior right-hander Alex Keudell, fell to 23-16 overall and 7-9 in Pac-12 play. Oregon improved to 28-13 and 12-7 in league.
The Bears had scored their lone run in the third inning when freshman shortstop Chris Paul started with an infield single to third base. Paul was sacrificed to second base by sophomore Derek Campbell and advanced to third base on junior Vince Bruno's single through the middle of the infield. Paul then scored of sophomore right fielder Andrew Knapp's sacrifice fly to left field.
Besides Paul and Bruno's singles, Cal's only other hits off of Keudell were by sophomore first baseman Mitch Delfino, Campbell and senior catcher Chadd Krist. Keudell threw a complete game with one walk and two strikeouts. Krist did have a two-out double to center field in the top of the ninth inning, giving him his 60th career double, only one double away from tying school record-holder Jon Zuber's 61 doubles from 1989-92.
Scott, who has seven saves this season, dropped to 3-2 after throwing 2.0 innings with four hits, three runs, two walks and a strikeout. The Bears had received a solid start from sophomore left-hander Michael Theofanopoulos, who went 5.1 innings with three hits, one unearned run, three walks and four strikeouts. Sophomore Michael Lowden replaced Theofanopoulos in the sixth inning and was able to get out of a bases loaded jam.
