After close games in the first two contests, California lost to No. 9-ranked Oregon, 7-1, Sunday (April 29) in the final of the Pac-12 series at PK Park in Eugene. The Golden Bears and the Ducks each had 10 hits apiece in Sunday's match-up, including senior catcher Chadd Krist's 61st career double, but UO had six, two-out clutch hits which made a difference in the outcome.
Cal was swept in the series after falling 4-1 Friday and 3-2 Saturday. The score was tied, 1-1, after seven innings on Friday, and 2-2 after six innings on Saturday. The Bears dropped to 23-18 overall and 7-11 in conference play, while Oregon improves to 30-13 and 14-7 in league.
Cal scored its lone run in the eighth inning when the Bears started the frame with three straight singles. Sophomore pinch hitter Jacob Wark, sophomore right fielder Andrew Knapp and junior second baseman Tony Renda each reached base, before junior first baseman Mitch Delfino forced in a bases loaded RBI with a walk.
Renda, Krist and senior left fielder Danny Oh led Cal offensively, all going 2-for-4 on the day. Renda and Krist also hit doubles, with Krist's double to left field in the second inning giving him his 61st career double, tying the school record for career doubles set by Jon Zuber from 1989-92.
The losing pitcher for the Bears was junior left-hander Justin Jones (3-6), who threw 5.0 innings with eight hits, six runs, three earned runs, two walks and four strikeouts. The winning pitcher for the Ducks was sophomore right-hander Jeff Gold (6-3, 7.0 innings, nine hits, one run, two strikeouts).
Cal next travels to Pullman, Wash., May 4-6, for a three-game Pac-12 series at Washington State. KNEW 960 AM, part of the IMG Sports Network, and Cal's student radio, KALX 90.7 FM, will be broadcasting all of next weekend's contests, with game times at 7 p.m. Friday, 5:30 Saturday and 12 p.m. Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
