Junior second baseman Tony Renda hit his fifth home run of the season, but Cal baseball was limited to just three hits in a 4-1 loss to No. 10-ranked Arizona Saturday (May 12) at Evans Diamond. The Wildcats, led by a complete-game from sophomore right-hander Konner Wade and home runs from Joey Rickard and Robert Refsnyder, improved to 32-15 overall and 15-8 in Pac-12 play. The Golden Bears dropped to 25-21 and 9-14 in league.
The losing pitcher for Cal was senior right-hander Matt Flemer (7-4), who threw 7.0 innings with eight hits, three runs, one walk and four strikeouts. Flemer has now thrown 7.0 innings or more in 11 of his 13 starts this season. After giving up the three runs in the first, the Cal senior was able to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard for the next six innings. Wade, the second Arizona pitcher to throw a complete game against the Bears this season, improved his record to 7-1 with three hits, one run, four walks and seven strikeouts.
The Wildcats took control of the game early with three runs in the top of the first inning off of Flemer. Rickard led-off the contest with a home run to left field and later in the inning Bobby Brown had a two-run single to center field.
Cal got its first hit of the game off of Wade in the fourth inning on sophomore right fielder Andrew Knapp's lead-off double down the right field line, but was stranded. The Bears were able to get within 3-1 on Renda's two-out homer to left field in the sixth inning. It was Renda's 237 career hit, placing him sixth on the Cal all-time career hit list.
However 3-1 was as close as the Bears would get as Refsnyder led-off the eighth inning with a home run to left field off of Cal reliever Joey Donofrio for the final 4-1 margin. Senior center fielder Chad Bunting was able to muster the only other hit for the Bears with a single down the right field line with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Cal next plays Arizona in the third game of the three-game Pac-12 series, Sunday, May 13 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The Bears trail the series with the Wildcats, 0-2, having lost Friday's match-up, 3-1. KNEW 960 AM, part of the IMG Sports Network, and Cal's student radio, KALX 90.7 FM, will be broadcasting Sunday's contest. Cal hosts Washington State in a non-conference contest, Monday, May 14, at 12 p.m. at Evans Diamond as well.
