Cal baseball fell to No. 10 Arizona, 7-4, Sunday (May 13) in the final game of the three-game Pac-12 series at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears had tied the contest, 3-3, in the second inning on senior catcher Chadd Krist's RBI single and freshman shortstop Brenden Farney's two-run double, but Cal was outscored 4-1 the rest of the way for the loss.
The Bears dropped to 25-22 overall and 9-15 in conference play, and were swept by the Wildcats (33-15, 16-8) in the series, losing 3-1 Friday and 4-1 Saturday.
The losing pitcher for Cal was junior left-hander Justin Jones (4-7), who went 4.0 innings with six hits, three earned runs, four walks and three strikeouts. Jones gave up three runs to Arizona in the top of the first inning, giving up an RBI single to Robert Refsnyder, throwing a run-scoring wild pitch and giving up a sacrifice fly to Seth Mejias-Brean.
The Bears came back to tie the game, 3-3, with three runs in the second inning when junior first baseman Mitch Delfino and junior designated hitter Vince Bruno had back-to-back singles off of Wildcat starter James Farris (3.0 innings, five hits, three runs, three walks, two strikeouts). Krist then scored Delfino with a single through the left side of the infield, and Farney scored both Bruno and Krist with a double through the right center field gap.
But, Arizona regained the lead, 4-3, with a run in the top of the third inning on an RBI single to first base by Bobby Brown, who scored Refsnyder after Refsnyder had reached third base on an errant pick-off attempt by Jones. The Wildcats upped their lead to 5-3 when Mejias-Brean had an RBI single up the middle in the fourth inning.
Cal got back within a run, 5-4, when junior left fielder Darrel Matthews had an RBI ground out to second base in the bottom of the fourth inning, but that would be as close as the Bears would get. Arizona sealed the win with single runs in the sixth and eighth innings, including Johnny Field's solo homer in the eighth.
The winning pitcher for the Wildcats was reliever Tyler Hale (2.0 innings, no hits, one run, four walks, one strikeout) and Tyler Crawford earned his first save, throwing the final 4.0 innings (one hit, one strikeout).
Delfino led Cal at the plate, going 3-for-4 to put his average at .376 for the year.
The Bears next host Washington State in a non-conference contest, Monday, May 14, at 12 p.m. at Evans Diamond. Cal then hosts UCLA in the final Pac-12 home series, May 18-20 at Evans Diamond. KNEW 960 AM, part of the IMG Sports Network, and Cal's student radio, KALX 90.7 FM, will be broadcasting next weekend's contests.
