Led by senior left fielder Danny Oh's 5-for-5 day and three hits apiece from junior second baseman Tony Renda and sophomore third baseman Mike Reuvekamp, the Cal baseball defeated Washington State, 13-8, Monday (May 14) in a non-conference game at Evans Diamond. With the win, the Golden Bears improved to 26-22 overall. The Cougars dropped to 24-24 on the year. Cal had earlier won two-of-three games (L 10-4, W 9-4, W 8-0) over WSU, May 4-6 in Pullman.
The Bears scored nine runs in the last two innings to come back from a 5-4 deficit. Oh's five hits was a career-high and included four runs scored. Senior right-hander Joey Donofrio earned the win in relief (1.2 innings, two hits, no walks, three strikeouts), improving his record to 5-1 on the season.
Cal took advantage of five Cougar errors in the game, including four errors in the Bears' four-run seventh as they came back after WSU had taken a 5-4 lead off of Taylor Ard's three-run double in the top of the seventh inning. Cal finished with 17 hits on the day with Renda going 3-for-4 with three RBI and Reuvekamp going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Junior first baseman Mitch Delfino, senior center fielder Chad Bunting and senior catcher Chadd Krist added two hits apiece for David Esquer's squad.
Freshman left-hander Chris Muse-Fisher started the contest for the Bears, throwing 6.0 innings with seven hits, two runs, no walks and three strikeouts.
"Danny Oh had a great day for us and Chris Muse-Fisher had a nice outing," said Esquer. "Renda and Reuvekamp also had some big hits for us, which was nice to see. It felt good to have our offense do well and score some runs."
Cal will next host No. 11-ranked UCLA in its final Pac-12 home series, May 18-20 at Evans Diamond. KNEW 960 AM, part of the IMG Sports Network, and Cal's student radio, KALX 90.7 FM, will be broadcasting next weekend's contests against the Bruins at Evans Diamond. Sunday, May 20 will be Senior Day, honoring the Bears' seven seniors, including right-hander Matt Flemer, Krist and Bunting, who were key performers in last year's College World Series run.
