The Cal baseball team (29-24, 12-17) continued its momentum against its Bay Area rival, tallying 17 hits in a 15-5 victory at No. 14-ranked Stanford (37-16, 17-12) Saturday (May 26) at Sunken Diamond. The Golden Bears had three-hit games from sophomores Derek Campbell and Mike Reuvekamp, while senior designated hitter Chadd Krist had two doubles and is now the school record-holder with 64 career doubles. Krist has hit three doubles so far in the Stanford series.
Freshman left-hander Chris Muse-Fisher won in relief (3-1, 2.2 innings, two hits, one run, one walk, one strikeout) Saturday, while freshman right-hander Keaton Siomkin earned his first collegiate save (career-high 5.0 innings, three hits, two runs, one walk, three strikeouts).
Cal was able to perform well after playing an 18 inning game the night before (5-4 win) to take a 2-0 lead in the Pac-12 series versus Stanford. The two teams will play game three of the match-up Sunday, May 27 at 1 p.m. at Sunken Diamond.
The Bears took control of the game early, exploding for four runs in the second inning off of Stanford starter Brett Mooneyham (7-5, 3.2 innings, 10 hits, eight earned runs, one walk, one strikeout) with Krist hitting a one-out double, senior outfielder Chad Bunting getting a two-out RBI double; and Campbell, senior outfielder Danny Oh and junior outfielder Vince Bruno getting two-out RBI singles.
Stanford came back to get two runs in the bottom of the second inning when Bear sophomore left-hander Michael Theofanopoulos ran into control problems loading the bases with three straight walks. A Muse-Fisher wild pitch then allowed a run, and catcher Andrew Knapp's errant throw after the wild pitch also gave Stanford a run.
But Cal tacked on five more runs in the fourth inning with Krist hitting a two-run double to left field. The Bears, who brought 10 players to the plate, were also aided by a Cardinal passed ball, a wild pitch and a throwing error. Cal continued the pressure with two runs in the sixth inning on Campbell's two-run single, three runs in the seventh inning on a wild pitch and RBI singles from junior first baseman Mitch Delfino and Knapp, and a run in the ninth inning on Bunting's RBI single.
The Cardinal utilized eight pitchers in the game. Besides Campbell's and Reuvekamp's three hits; Oh, Bruno, Delfino, Krist and Bunting had two hits apiece. Oh has now raised his batting average to .344 and has had six straight games with multiple hits. The Bears' 15-5 win was their biggest margin of victory for the team this season since defeating Lehigh, 18-3, March 4 at Evans Diamond. It is Cal's first series win over the Cardinal since 2009.
