Senior catcher Chadd Krist went 2-for-3 with his 65th career double and junior third baseman Mitch Delfino homered, but Cal concluded its 2012 regular season losing to No. 14 Stanford, 5-3, Sunday (May 27) at Sunken Diamond. The Golden Bears (29-25, 12-18) ended up winning the series over the Cardinal (38-16, 18-12), defeating Stanford, 5-4 in 18 innings Friday night, and 15-5 Saturday. It was Cal's first league series win at Sunken Diamond since 2008.
The Bears battled Stanford, one of the 16 regional sites announced for the 2012 NCAA tournament, tough the entire weekend and finished the 2012 campaign winning three of their last four games.
After senior Chad Bunting made a spectacular diving catch in right field to save two runs in the bottom of the first inning, Delfino gave the Bears a 1-0 lead with a lead-off home run to left field off of Stanford starter Stephen Piscotty (5-2, 7.0 innings, four hits, three runs, one walk, two strikeouts).
Stanford came back to score three runs in the second inning when Jake Stewart hit a line drive three-run homer to left field off of junior left-hander Justin Jones (4-9, 2.0 innings, three hits, three runs, two walks, three strikeouts), making the score 3-1.
Cal got back a run in the third inning with sophomore designated hitter Derek Campbell led off with a double and advanced to third base on a throwing error by Cardinal left fielder Tyler Gaffney. Campbell then scored on senior left fielder Danny Oh's sacrifice fly to right field. But, the Cardinal came right back with a run in the bottom of the third inning on a check swing RBI single by Brett Michael Doran to make the score, 4-2.
The Bears were able to get within 4-3 after Delfino was hit by a pitch, Krist hit his school record 65th career double to left field and junior center fielder Darrel Matthews scored Delfino with an RBI ground out to second base. Yet, Stanford extended its lead to 5-3 with a lead-off home run to left field by Gaffney off of sophomore left-hander Kyle Porter to start the bottom the fourth inning.
From that point, neither team scored as Cal got excellent relief pitching from senior right-handers Joey Donofrio (2.0 innings, two hits, no walks, four strikeouts) and Matt Flemer (2.0 innings, two hits, no walks, one strikeout).
Oh finished the 2012 season going 18-for-29 (.621) and getting a hit in the final seven games, including multiple hits in six of those seven contests to raise his average to .344.
