BERKELEY - Cal's women's volleyball team won its second match in a row at the Cal Molten Classic on Saturday, rolling past UC Riverside, 25-19, 25-15, 25-19.
Senior middle hitter Shannon Hawari continued her strong tournament with a team-high 11 kills on a .500 hitting percentage. Outside hitters Nikki Gombar and Adrienne Gehan added eight kills apiece. Gehan also registered 11 digs.
Like Friday's sweep of Penn, the Bears (4-3) were challenged in the first set. The Highlanders (3-5) jumped out to a 5-0 lead, forcing a Cal timeout. But after UC Riverside led 8-2, the Bears reeled off seven points in a row to establish a 9-8 advantage. From there, it remained close until it was tied at 19-19. But the Bears scored the final six points of the set, getting a couple of kills from Hawari in the process.
In the second set, it was Cal's turn to start quick. The Bears scored six of the first seven points to force a Highlanders timeout. The Bears never let UC Riverside back in the set, pushing the advantage to 10-2 and leading comfortably the rest of the way.
The Highlanders led 6-3 early in the third set, but the Bears came back and gradually pulled away. Three points in a row gave them a 21-17 edge and they cruised to the victory.
Senior middle hitter Kat Brown had seven block assists and the Bears had 11 total blocks overall.
The Bears play their final match of the Cal Molten Classic on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
