Was Cal's top high school recruit coming into the fall and is in contention for playing time in left field…has good speed and can hit to all fields…had a solid fall practice and will be a key player for the Bears in the future..

HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: At Tulare Union High School was East Yosemite League MVP as a freshman and then went on to be a four-time all-league selection, a three-year member of the All-Area Team and a three-time team MVP…batted .463 as a freshman, .389 as a sophomore, .385 as a junior and .377 as a senior…finished his high school baseball career with 147 hits, 142 runs, 13 home runs, 68 RBI and 67 stolen bases…played in the the Area Code Games in 1997 and '98, and attended Team One Baseball Showcase in Arizona in 1998…was also a two-time selection to the Cal Hi Sports Magazine All-State Underclassman Team…competed three years on the varsity football team where he was a two-time all-league selection and a two-time member of the All-Area Team as a wide receiver…was named league Offensive MVP as a senior…was a standout goalie on the soccer team as well, setting a school record for single-season shutouts with 16…this past summer played for the Central Valley All-Star Team from Fresno, CA, batting .421 with seven home runs and 39 RBI…was chosen the MVP of the Reedley Classic Tournament and later helped his team to a 56-7 record and the 1999 Pride of America World Series title in Cleveland, OH…graduated as his school's valedictorian with a 4.11 GPA and was the recipient of the Central Section CIF Scholar-Athlete award…was recruited by Stanford, Loyola Marymount, Fresno State and Wake Forest before selecting Cal…undeclared major...parents are Jack and Linda Smith...born August 13, 1980 in Tulare, CA.
