AS A JUNIOR (1999): Had the best season of his Bear career, finishing the year 3-2 with a 5.93 ERA and led Cal in appearances with 26, including two starts (Feb. 19 at Stanford, Mar. 24 at Long Beach State)...was tied for sixth in the Pac-10 in appearances...picked up the victory Mar. 21 versus Washington, coming in in the ninth inning to pitch 2.0 innings with two hits, no runs and one walk in the Bears 6-5, 10-inning win...started Mar. 24 in the 5-3 victory at Long Beach State, pitching 3.0 innings with two hits, no runs and two strikeouts...earned the Edwin E. Lord, Jr. Award as the team's Most Inspirational Player...
AS A SOPHOMORE (1998): Was 0-0 with a 9.98 ERA and a save...had seven strikeouts and nine walks, in 15.3 innings...had four strikeouts in 5.0 innings versus conference foes...picked up a save after throwing a season-high 4.0 innings Apr. 28 versus Santa Clara...
AS A FRESHMAN (1997): Had surgery in September of 1996 and began throwing again at the end of '96 fall practice...finished the season 0-1 with a 8.42 ERA...saw action in 10 games with five starts and 11 strikeouts in 25.7 innings...pitched his first game of the season for the Bears Mar. 5 versus CS Hayward, throwing 2.0 innings with two hits, no runs and two walks...first start was Mar. 18 versus Washington State, throwing a career-high 5.0 innings with four hits, two earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts...another top start was Apr. 15 versus Sacramento State, throwing 4.7 innings with four hits, one run, four walks and two strikeouts...
HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: As a senior at Los Alamitos High School was named all-league, All-Orange County, all-state and was a member of the Long Beach Dream Team...was also a member of the Orange County All-Star team, competed in the North/South All-Star series and was a member of the All-State Team that competed in the Sunbelt Classic during the summer...helped lead his team to the first round of the CIF Playoffs in 1996...in 1995 was rated one of the Top 50 players after the Area Code Games and was a member of a Goodwill Series team that traveled to Japan and Korea...as a sophomore in high school set the school record for saves with six and had the school's second-best all-time single-season win mark with 10 victories...in the summers of 1997-98 played for the Chatham A's in the Cape Cod League, going a combined 2-4 with 19 strikeouts in 33.3 innings...had a 3.8 high school GPA...was recruited by Arizona State, USC, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Santa Clara, Florida and Oklahoma before selecting Cal...majoring in political science...parents are Jerry Ball and Barbara Lyon...born February 3, 1978 in Long Beach, CA.
