LOS ANGELES – Sophomore attacker Farrel South and senior All-American Aleksa Saponjic scored three goals apiece, and senior goalie Jon Sibley had nine saves, as No. 3-ranked Cal defeated No. 7 Long Beach State, 14-8, in the second round of the SoCal Tournament Saturday at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Pool. With the win, Kirk Everist's squad upped it record to 16-1 and will next face No. 2 seed Stanford (14-1) in the tournament semifinal at 12:15 p.m. Sunday at UCLA's Spieker Aquatic Center.

Earlier Saturday the Golden Bears had defeated Whittier, 16-3. When Cal plays Stanford in the SoCal Tournament semifinal, it will be looking to avenge its only loss of the 2014 season – an 11-8 loss to the Cardinal in the semifinal of the Kap7 NorCal Classic Sept. 21 in Stockton

Other top scorers for the Bears against the LBSU 49ers – coached by former Cal All-American and Olympian Gavin Arroyo – were sophomore Thomas Carroll and freshman left-hander Conor Neumann with two goals each. Saponjic paced Cal with three assists.

In the morning win over Whittier, sophomore goalie Lazar Andric tallied 12 saves, and Saponjic and redshirt freshman J.D. Ratchford had three goals. Carroll added two goals and South led Cal with three steals. Carroll, senior Matt Russell and freshman Luca Cupido had two steals apiece. Lazar, a junior college transfer from Long Beach City College, also had five assists and three steals versus Whittier.
