STANFORD, Calif. – The doubles final at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships will feature a California pair for the third straight season, thanks to Oskar Wikberg and Andre Goransson's semifinal upset of Washington's 21st-ranked Emmett Egger and Jeffrey Hawke on Monday. The Golden Bears – seeded third in the tournament – defeated the second-seeded Huskies, 7-6(7), 3-6, 1-0(7), at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

“Andre and Oskar played their best tennis of the tournament so far today,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “Washington's team is one of the top doubles teams in the country, and it was an extremely well-played match by both teams. We struggled a bit with our serving in the second set but regained our rhythm in the tiebreaker.”

In the 9 a.m. final on Tuesday – the last day of the regional – the Bears will battle San Francisco's fifth-seeded duo of Bernardo Saraiva and Nils Skajaa for a trip to New York. The singles and doubles winners at the 12 regional tournaments automatically qualify to compete in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships scheduled for Nov. 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.

Monday's victory gave the pair of Wikberg, a junior, and Goransson, a sophomore, a record of 4-0 in their short tenure as collegiate doubles partners. Despite only playing together a handful of times at Cal – and despite the fact this is Wikberg's first year as a Bear after he transferred from Wisconsin – the two Bears are not strangers to each other. Wikberg, a native of Taby, Sweden, and Goransson – who hails from Hollviken, Sweden – attended the same high school in Båstad Gymnasium. Sophomore teammate Filip Bergevi, from Ahus, Sweden, also attended Båstad for two years, overlapping with Wikberg for one year and Goransson for both.

Cal teams won the regional doubles title in each of the previous four years: Nick Andrews/Christoffer Konigsfeldt captured the championship in 2010, Ben McLachlan/Carlos Cueto won in 2011, Ben and Riki McLachlan won the 2012 trophy, and seniors Chase Melton and Gregory Bayane took home the 2013 crown.
