Cal MWP Outscores UC Irvine, 19-15
IRVINE, CALIF. – Freshman Luca Cupido had another big scoring day and sophomore goalie Lazar Andric had 10 saves in two quarters as Cal defeated UC Irvine, 19-15, Sunday in an MPSF contest in Irvine. After earlier defeating Pepperdine (15-6) Saturday in Malibu, the Golden Bears improve to 19-3 overall and 3-1 in league play. Cupido, who tallied three goals Saturday, again led Kirk Everist's squad in scoring with four goals against the UCI Anteaters.
Junior Colin Mulcahy added three goals and sophomore Thomas Carroll led Cal with four assists – while Cupido, senior Aleksa Saponjic and redshirt freshman J.D. Ratchford had three assists apiece. Senior goalie Jon Sibley had four blocks in the second half.
Other top scorers for the Bears were Saponjic, senior Luka Ivanovic and freshman Conor Neumann with two goals apiece. Eleven different Cal players scored in the contest.
After the two teams tied, 3-3, after the first period, the Bears gave themselves a cushion by outscoring the Anteaters, 6-3, in the second quarter behind goals from Ivanovic, Mulcahy, Cupido, junior Thomas Agramonte, Saponjic and freshman Nicholas Carniglia.
Cal continues its MPSF slate next weekend, hosting UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Nov. 1 and Long Beach State on Sunday, Nov. 2. Both matches begin at 1 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
