Cal Trio Earns Capital One Academic All-District Honors
BERKELEY, Calif. – Three members of the No. 17 California Golden Bears (8-3-1, 2-2-1 Pac-12) were named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District Eight Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday. Seniors Omid Jalali, Max Oldham and Connor Hallisey have each demonstrated excellence on the field for the Bears and have also done so in the classroom.
The athletes selected to each team are recognized as the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance in athletics and academics. The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. Jalali, Oldham and Hallisey are now eligible to be selected for Capital One Academic All-America honors, which will be voted on later this month.
Jalali, a business administration major on a pre-med track, boasts a 3.86 grade point average and has tallied two goals in eight appearances thus far this season. One of three co-captains, Jalali earns this distinction for the second consecutive season.
Oldham is recognized as a Capital One/CoSIDA All-Academic first teamer for the first time in his career. The Oakland, Calif. native is an ethnic studies major with a 3.68 GPA. The senior has registered 10 points (two goals and six assists) during his senior campaign for the Bears.
Hallisey, also a business administration major, has posted a 3.34 GPA. The Bears point-leader in 2014, Hallisey has posted 23 points (seven goals and nine assists) in just 12 appearances. He is currently tied for first in the country with 1.92 points per game and is second only to Oregon State's Khiry Shelton in total points in the Pac-12 (27 in 16 games played).
Cal makes its final road trip of the regular season as the Bears battle the San Diego State Aztecs (7-9-0. 1-6-0 Pac-12) tonight at 7 p.m. PT and take on No. 1 UCLA (10-3-3, 5-1-1 Pac-12) on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 5 p.m. in a match to air on the Pac-12 Networks. Cal defeated both in their previous meetings in Berkeley, knocking off then-No. 2 UCLA 3-2 in overtime on Oct. 10 and San Diego State 4-3 on Oct. 12.
