Bears Knock Off Pacific In MPSF Opener
STOCKTON, Calif. – Led by seniors Colin Mulcahy, Aleksa Saponjic, and freshman Luca Cupido with three goals apiece, the No. 3-ranked Cal men's water polo team recorded its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win, defeating Pacific 17-14 Friday night in Stockton. With the win, the Golden Bears improved to 14-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
The match was a tough fight, and with a few different Bears with two ejections each, the strength of the bench proved strong. Senior goalie Jon Sibley and sophomore Lazar Andric split time in the goal to hold down the defense, recording a combined total of nine saves. Senior Luka Ivanovic added two goals, with six other Bears contributing single goals. Saponjic and freshman Conor Neuman lead the team in assists with three each; Cupido led with three steals, and five different Bears came up big with shot-blocks to help hold onto a lead for the entire game.
The Bears travel next weekend to Los Angeles, Calif. for the SoCal Invitational where they will come up against some of the top teams in the nation. Full schedule is to be determined.
