TUCSON, Ariz. – Junior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise tallied nine kills and three blocks but the Cal volleyball team fell to No. 16 Arizona on Wednesday night, 25-19, 25-19, 25-11 at the McKale Center.

Senior outside hitter Christina Higgins added nine kills and two blocks while sophomore libero Maddy Kerr registered 12 digs. It was Kerr's first appearance at the McKale Center, where her father Steve starred as a basketball player in the mid-1980s before moving on to become a five-time NBA champion. Steve Kerr is now the head coach of the NBA's Golden State Warriors.

Maddy Kerr received a nice ovation from the crowd at the McKale Center when her name was announced over the public address system during the introduction of the starting lineups. She spent part of her young childhood in Tucson and had several family members in the crowd.

Sophomore setter Alyssa Jensen dished out 27 assists and had 10 digs while sophomore middle blocker Jenelle Jordan recorded three kills and three blocks.

The first part of the first set stayed close, with the teams trading points to a 7-7 tie. But the Wildcats scored four in a row to surge in front, and eventually extended to an 18-11 advantage. The Bears (8-7, 0-5 Pac-12) scored three of four points to cut Arizona's lead to 23-18 before the Wildcats closed out the set.

Arizona (15-2, 4-1) got off to a strong start to begin the second set, jumping out to a 4-0 advantage. But Cal fought back to eventually tie it at 11-11. After the Wildcats led 14-13, they went on a 5-0 run to take command.

The Bears had a forgettable third set, falling behind 11-0 before finally scoring a point. Cal never got closer than a nine-point deficit.

Freshman setter Sammy Furlan made her college debut, playing a few points in the third set.

The Bears will next visit No. 18 Arizona State on Friday at 7 p.m.
