Bears Drop Four-Set Match To No. 12 Oregon
EUGENE, Ore. – Sophomore middle blocker Jenelle Jordan set career-highs with eight kills and eight blocks but the Cal volleyball team fell to No. 12 Oregon 20-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-18 on Friday night at Matthew Knight Arena.
Senior outside hitter Christina Higgins led the Bears with 17 kills and seven blocks while junior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise had 12 kills and four blocks. The Bears (8-13, 0-11 Pac-12) tied a season-high with 14 blocks.
Cal started the match strong, breaking a 9-9 tie with a five-point run to make it 14-9. The Bears ultimately extended to a 22-15 and cruised to the first-set win. Cal had six blocks in the first set, when Higgins registered six of her kills.
“I love the way we started out the match,” Cal coach Rich Feller said. “I thought our block and our defense was as good as it's been – against a very good hitting team. We earned that first set victory.”
Most of the second set was close, with the Bears trailing 17-15. But the Ducks (17-4, 7-4) notched six of the next seven points to take control.
Oregon held an 18-16 lead in the third set but again went on a late run, scoring five of six points to seize command. The Ducks pulled away a little sooner in the fourth set, notching four of five points to lead 19-14. The Bears trimmed the deficit to three but could get no closer.
“Unfortunately, we couldn't sustain it and Oregon made some adjustments,” Feller said. “We didn't adjust fast enough to what they did.”
The Bears have played ranked teams in five of their past seven matches and won at least one set each time. The Bears next visit Oregon State on Sunday at Noon.
“The hard part is we are good enough to beat some of these teams, but until we do, it's hard to convince our team that we are,” Feller said. “They have to believe it. We're going to keep working at it and keep trying.”
