BERKELEY – Freshman Luca Cupido paced the Golden Bears with five goals as No. 4-ranked Cal scored 20 and won its 20th match of the season in a 20-10 win Saturday over UC Santa Barbara in an MPSF contest at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears improved to 20-3 overall and 4-1 in league play and will next face No. 5 Long Beach State Sunday at 1 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics.

Besides the high scoring of Cupido, senior All-American Aleksa Saponjic and reshirt freshman J.D. Ratchford added three goals apiece. Junior Colin Mulcahy chipped in two goals and seven other Bears also scored for Kirk Everist's squad. Additionally, Cupido and senior goalie Jon Sibley led the Bears with three steals apiece.

Cupido has now scored 38 goals in 18 matches this season (2.11 goals per game), and has scored 12 goals in the last three matches.

The contest was close in the first half. Mulcahy tied the match, 2-2, with a goal at 3:30 in the first period. That started a 4-0 run for Cal as sophomore Farrel South, Ratchford and freshman Conor Neumann followed Mulcahy with goals to give the Bears a 5-2 lead after the first quarter. However, the Gauchos came back to get within, 6-5, at the half on Shaun Hauschild's last second goal.

It was all Cal in the second half as the Bears outscored UCSB, 6-1, in the third period and, 8-4, in the fourth quarter to cruise to the 20-10 win.
