CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Cal volleyball team registered a season-high 88 digs and senior Christina Higgins had 21 kills but the Bears fell to Oregon State on Sunday, 25-17, 25-21, 21-25, 25-23.

Sophomore libero Maddy Kerr had a season-high 29 digs, defensive specialist Sarah Cole had a career-high 20 digs and freshman Ashten Smith-Gooden added 16 kills.

Sophomore setter Alyssa Jensen dished out a career-high 59 assists – tied for the most in a four-set Pac-12 match this season - and junior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise added 12 kills.

After the Beavers won the first set comfortably, the Bears (8-14, 0-12) put up a stiff battle in the second set. Cal had a 13-12 lead but Oregon St. went back in front 18-15. The Bears trimmed the deficit to 19-17, but the Beavers scored three straight points to take command.

Cal elevated its performance in the third set, as Higgins notched nine kills in the set alone and the Bears blanketed the court defensively. The Bears came up with 27digs in the third set and raced out to a 19-13 lead. Oregon St. sliced into the lead to cut it to 21-18, but Cal never let the lead get under three points.

The Beavers began to pull away late in the fourth set, extending to a 16-12 advantage. But the Bears scored three in a row, with two points coming on kills by Higgins and sophomore Nikki Gombar. After Oregon St. went back in front 20-18, another Higgins kill followed by a Beavers hitting error tied the set up at 20-20.

Smith-Gooden and Schonewise came up with kills to help Cal take its first lead of the set at 22-21. The Beavers came back to tie it at 23-23, and a block and a kill by Oregon St. closed out the match.

The Bears will return to action Friday against No. 19 Arizona State at Haas Pavilion at 7 p.m.
