Cal Rebounds with 11-9 Win over UCSB
LONG BEACH, CALIF. - Led by four goals from sophomore Farrel South and 12 saves from sophomore goalie Lazar Andric, Cal men's water polo rebounded from its first round loss with an 11-9 victory over UC Santa Barbara Saturday at the MPSF Tournament.
With the win, the Golden Bears improved to 21-7 and will next play in the tournament's fifth place match at 11:30 a.m. Sunday versus Pepperdine.
Other highlights in Cal's win over the Gauchos was senior Aleksa Saponjic tallying three assists with two goals, and junior Thomas Agramonte forcing two five-meter penalty shots. Along with registering 12 saves, Andric also had three steals.
Senior Blake Kelly, sophomore Chander Jarrels-Stickney, freshman Pedro Stellet, junior Colin Mulcahy and redshirt freshman J.D. Ratchford also scored for Kirk Everist's squad.
After the two teams scored three goals apiece in the first period, Cal outscored UCSB, 4-2, in the second quarter for a 7-5 halftime lead. The Bears then maintained the two-goal advantage the rest of the match.
"It was a good effort by our team coming back from yesterday (a 9-6 loss to Long Beach State)," said Everist. "We got some big goals from Farrel South today, which we needed for the win."
