Getting to Know: Joshua Morton

Getting to Know: Joshua Morton

As the Golden Bears turn their attention to the third round of the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament, CalBears.com caught up with freshman defender Joshua Morton to learn a little more about the newcomer. Morton shares his hobbies off the field, his celebrity crush and more in this edition of Inside the Lair's “Getting to Know…” spotlight.

CalBears.com: What are some of your hobbies off of the field?

Joshua Morton: I love playing soccer tennis at the tennis courts. I also like playing ping pong. I am a big movie guy. My favorite movie is probably Dumb and Dumber. It is the best.

CB: Outside of soccer, what are your career goals when you are finished playing?

JM: I am still taking all my prerequisite classes, so I am still unsure of what my major will be. I know that when I am done playing soccer, I want to coach high school or club soccer. I have such a passion for that. Whatever I am doing, I want to coach. That is one thing I am set to do. I am not stepping off that field, not a chance.

CB: Who has been the most influential person/people in your life and why?

JM: I would have to say my two brothers and my dad. After every game, they call me – because they are watching in on Pac-12 Networks – and tell me what I should do better, or what I did well. They have always been there to tell me what I need to hear to make me better. My parents are at every game and they are my number one fans.

CB: What has been your favorite memory during your time in Berkeley?

JM: Before school started, we had to be here for preseason and the dorms weren't set up for us, so we had to live with our teammates. I was living with Nick Lima and Trevor Long. Every single night we would watch a movie and cook dinner, then play soccer the next day. We did that every day for two weeks, and it was such a fun time. I cannot cook anything. I am probably the worst cook in the world. Nick is a really good cook, so I would go buy the ingredients and he would make some great food.

CB: Do you have any special talents?

JM: I can make a lot of threes in basketball – I am pretty good at that.

CB: What are three things that everyone should know about you?

JM: I am a Christian. I believe in God, and that is number one. Number two, I did not grow up in California. I actually grew up in Indiana in a small town near Chicago. I lived there my whole like and I moved out to California to start high school. Number three, I have never been to Hawaii before. My parents went there last year during my spring break, but they didn't take me. It has really been bothering me since then.

CB: Who is your favorite athlete or someone you looked up to most when you were younger?

JM: This is going to sound cliché, but I look up to Cristiano Ronaldo. I grew up loving Manchester United, and he was on the team at that time. I would watch every game and what he would do with the ball would amaze me. I would go in my backyard and try to do everything he did in the game I just watched. I would do that for hours. He was the model that really motivated me in soccer.

CB: If you could leave a season ticket for one celebrity to come see you play, who would it be?

JM: Jennifer Lawrence, 100 percent. I would leave a season ticket for the rest of my life for her.
