Volleyball Falls To No. 1 Stanford In 2014 Finale
BERKELEY – Fans were still filing out of Haas Pavilion on Friday afternoon and the Cal volleyball coaching staff was already beginning the process of putting an improved team on the floor in 2015.
“Beginning Monday, we're going to deconstruct our season and look at every training, beginning with last spring,” Cal coach Rich Feller said after the Bears closed out the 2014 season with a 25-15, 25-19, 25-15 loss to No. 1 Stanford in the Big Spike. “Then we are going to reconstruct our training regime for the spring, one that will prepare us for next year. We need to set a standard. We need to be more attentive to detail throughout our training and get the maximum out of our team in the spring.”
The Bears finished the season 10-20 and 2-18 in the Pac-12, putting Cal out of NCAA Tournament contention. Cal had made the postseason for 12 consecutive years. Still, the Bears have a strong nucleus of young players and lose just two seniors. Cal also signed three top prospects during the fall signing period and is expected to add more high-level student-athletes in the spring.
“I promise this spring will be as tough a spring as these players have ever gone through,” Feller said. “We're going to put a better team on the floor next year than we had this year.”
For the second straight match to close the season, the Bears had to play with a depleted roster. Freshman outside hitter Ashten Smith-Gooden missed her fourth match in the past five with an injury and sophomore outside hitter Nikki Gombar was forced to sit out after suffering an injury during Wednesday's win over Washington State.
With freshman outside hitter Christine Alftin still recovering from the flu, defensive specialist Sarah Cole was forced to play in the front row and responded with five kills.
Outside hitter Christina Higgins and defensive specialist Marlee Davis played their final college matches and were honored during a pre-match ceremony. Higgins finished with a team-high 11 kills and ended her career with 1,291 kills, the ninth-best all-time total at Cal.
Higgins was an AVCA Second Team All-American last season and entered the day ranked eighth in the Pac-12 in kills.
“Christina put up a lot of numbers because we asked her to do so much,” Feller said. “She had to be relied on more than ever this year. She came to practic every day and always had a good spirit about her. She matured from the beginning of her career to the end as much as any player I've had in the program.”
Davis was one of the Bears' top defensive specialists over the past four years. She came to Cal as a walk-on but earned a scholarship this season. Davis finished her career with 534 career digs.
“I have to hand it to Marlee. She battled some injuries but still came to practice every day and did what she had to do,” Feller said. “She really was our best passer this year. I have to hand it to her for continuing to work hard.”
Junior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise had 10 kills and finished the season with a .345 hitting percentage, which is the 11th-best mark in school history. Sophomore libero Maddy Kerr ended the season with 462 digs, which is the eighth-best single-season total at Cal. Kerr's 430 digs last year is the ninth-best total in program history.
“I do have to hand it to the team. They came to practice every day throughout a tough season and continued to work hard,” Feller said. “It was unfortunate it didn't always show in matches. The hard work they put in didn't show up a lot of the time in the matches that we played. It may have looked at times like we weren't doing everything we could to get better, but we were.”
