No. 14 California Upends Creighton 94-69 to Win Cal Classic
BERKELEY – Brittany Boyd was named the Tournament MVP after leading No. 14 California to the Cal Classic championship with a 94-69 win over Creighton Saturday night at Haas Pavilion.
Boyd, who posted her second career triple-double Friday night against San Jose State, nearly matched the feat against the Bluejays with 14 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and five steals in just 22 minutes of action.
The win gives California (6-0) its fourth consecutive Cal Classic championship. Reshanda Gray led California with 21 points on a 7-of-8 shooting night while pulling down eight rebounds. Courtney Range (17) and Justine Hartman (13) both hit double figures scoring as well to pace the Golden Bears.
The Cal Classic All-Tournament Team consisted of Gray, Gabby Green, Ana Owens of Cincinnati, Jasmine Smith of San Jose State and Marissa Janning of Creighton (3-3).
The Bears finished with 26 assists on 37 made field goals to continue the flowing offense that has led Cal to a 6-0 record with an average of 21.6 assists per game prior to Saturday night.
Cal also held a 46-31 rebounding advantage with at least four players registering five boards or more for the game.
Janning led Creighton with 22 points while MC McGrory and Sydney Lamberty both also hit double-figures scoring.
California hosts Sacramento State on Wednesday with tip-off scheduled for 11 a.m. at Haas Pavilion.
