Bears Drop Tight Four-Set Match To No. 20 ASU
BERKELEY – The Cal volleyball team played four tight sets against No. 20 Arizona State on Friday but the Sun Devils pulled out a 26-28, 25-22, 26-24, 25-22 victory at Haas Pavilion.
Senior Christina Higgins led the Bears (8-15, 0-13 Pac-12) with 17 kills and three blocks while junior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise had 15 kills and five blocks. Sophomore libero Maddy Kerr had 20 digs.
Cal led for most of the first set but the Sun Devils (17-8, 7-6) came back to tie it at 17-17. The Bears went back in front 23-20 but again Arizona State tied it up. The Sun Devils then had three set points but Cal avoided the loss each time. Finally, the Bears closed out the set on a block by Schonewise and Higgins.
The second set was again back and forth, but Arizona State ultimately established a 22-18 lead. Each team scored two points in a row for 24-20, and after Cal cut it to 24-22, the Sun Devils closed out the set to even the match.
The Bears led throughout the first set until Arizona State tied it at 18-18. Cal then led 22-20 before the Sun Devils scored two in a row to knot it back up. The teams then exchanged points until ASU broke a 24-24 tie with consecutive points.
The Sun Devils led throughout the fourth set but the Bears were in striking distance the whole time. Cal trailed by just two at 20-18, 21-19, and 22-20, but Arizona St. then took a 24-21 lead and ultimately finished off the match.
The Bears had three players in double-digits in digs. In addition to Kerr's output, junior Sarah Cole had 14 and junior Mary McKennon added 10. Junior opposite hitter Lara Vukasovic also had five blocks.
Despite being winless in Pac-12 play, the Bears have won the first set in six of their 13 conference matches. Nine of those matches have come against ranked opponents.
The Bears will be back at it Sunday against No. 16 Arizona at 11 a.m. The match will air on the Pac-12 Networks.
