Bears Beaten By No. 16 Arizona
BERKELEY – Freshman Antzela Dempi had a career-high eight kills at a .583 hitting percentage and junior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise added 11 kills and three blocks but the Cal volleyball team fell to No. 16 Arizona on Sunday, 25-19, 25-19, 25-21.
Dempi registered her kill total in just two sets of action. Sophomore libero Maddy Kerr added 11 digs and sophomore setter Alyssa Jensen had 37 assists and three blocks. Sophomore Nikki Gombar had 10 digs.
The Bears stuck with the Wildcats during the first half of each set, as each time Cal trailed 15-13. But in each instance, Arizona was able to pull away at the end.
In the first set, the Wildcats scored six of seven points to open a 21-14 lead. The teams were tied at 16-16 in the second set when Arizona notched four points in success to take command. Cal was still as close as 18-16 in the third set but ultimately couldn't keep up with the Wildcats.
The Bears (8-16, 0-14 Pac-12) return to action Friday at No. 19 USC at 7 p.m.
