BERKELEY - Cal baseball took and early 5-0 lead, sparked by Derek Campbell's home run, but then faltered, falling 10-5 to Tulane Friday night (March 7) during the first day of the Cal Baseball Classic at Evans Diamond.

With the loss, the Golden Bears dropped to 8-4 and the Green Wave improved to 9-3. In the first game of the Cal Baseball Classic, San Francisco defeated Arkansas, 2-1.

On Saturday, Tulane will face Arkansas at 1:30 p.m. and Cal will host San Francisco at 6 p.m. On Sunday, the Bears host Arkansas in a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m.

Cal started off strong, scoring three runs in the second inning as Campbell started the game's scoring with a lead-off homer to left field. The Bears scored twice more in the second on wild pitch by Tulane starter Tyler Mapes and a bases loaded hit by pitch by Devin Pearson.

Cal added two more runs in the fourth inning when senior shortstop Mike Reuvekamp had a two-out double, and then scored on Pearson's RBI single. Pearson later scored on senior designated hitter Devon Rodriguez's RBI single.

Unfortunately for the Bears, freshman right-hander Daulton Jefferies (2-1) ran into trouble in the fifth inning and ended up giving up seven earned runs, including a three-run double to Garrett Deschamp and a two-run homer to Hunter Hope.
