Bears Swept By Pacific At Molten Classic

BERKELEY – Junior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise had nine kills and five blocks and sophomore libero Maddy Kerr recorded 12 digs but Cal's volleyball team fell to Pacific 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 on Friday night in the Molten Classic at Haas Pavilion.

Freshman outside hitter Ashten Smith-Gooden and junior middle blocker Lara Vukasovic also put down nine kills apiece while freshman outside hitter Christine Alftin added five kills and six digs for the Bears (5-2). Cal lost for the first time ever in the Molten Classic, which began in 2006.

The Bears fell behind 20-13 in the first set before coming back to cut the deficit to 22-20. In the second set, Cal trailed by nine before shaving the lead down to four. The third set was close throughout, with the Bears trailing just 21-20 before the Tigers closed it out.

The Bears continue play in the Molten Classic on Saturday with matches against Nevada at 10 a.m. and UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m.
