Bears Win Thrice to Open Season in Napa
ST. HELENA, Calif. – California opened the 2014-15 season by winning twice in singles and once in doubles on the first day of the Porsche Napa Valley Tennis Classic on Friday at the Meadowood Napa Valley Resort.
The Golden Bears, the hosts of the 14th annual tournament, also suffered three singles losses and one doubles loss at Meadowood.
The Cal pair of senior Gregory Bayane and sophomore Andre Goransson defeated Tulsa's Alejandro Espejo and Or Ram-Harel, 8-5. The Bears lost two matches to Harvard, with Goransson falling to Sebastian Beltrame, 6-4, 6-1, in singles, and the duo of sophomore Filip Bergevi and freshman Billy Griffith dropping an 8-6 doubles result against Nicky Hu and Kenny Tao.
Cal also went 2-2 in singles against the USTA Junior National Team at Meadowood, with Bayane and Griffith posting victories. On Sept. 17 in Berkeley, the Bears won seven out of eight singles matches against the USTA juniors.
The 32-player field at Meadowood is competing in round-robin groups for a spot in Sunday's Solinco USTA Wild Card Shootout, a tiebreaker tournament used to determine the winner. The shootout champion will receive a wild card into a future USTA Pro Circuit tournament.
The tournament continues on Saturday, with matches beginning at 10:30 a.m.
