Bears Win 6 of 7 on Day 2 at Meadowood
ST. HELENA, Calif. – California won six matches and dropped just one on the second day of the Porsche Napa Valley Tennis Classic on Saturday at the Meadowood Napa Valley Resort.
Senior Gregory Bayane, sophomores Filip Bergevi and Andre Goransson, and freshman Billy Griffith all won in singles and doubles for the Golden Bears. Bayane beat Tulsa's Dylan McCloskey, 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-2, in singles then paired with Goransson to defeat Harvard's Sebastian Beltrame/Denis Nguyen, 8-7(5), in doubles.
In singles, Goransson topped Stanford's 54th-ranked Maciek Romanowicz, 7-6(1), 6-4, Bergevi knocked off Texas Longhorn Lloyd Glasspool, 6-3, 6-3, in an upset between two nationally ranked opponents. Glasspool, an ITA All-American last year in doubles, is ranked 31st in the ITA preseason singles rankings, while Bergevi is ranked 120th.
Griffith emerged victorious from his match with Nick Naumann – ranked 113th – of Texas. Griffith led, 6-1, 2-0, when Naumann retired with an injury. Also in singles, junior Hasier Pastor fell to Tulsa's 75th-ranked Alejandro Espejo, 6-4, 6-2.
Bergevi paired with Griffith in doubles to beat a USTA Junior National Team duo, 8-5.
The 32-player field at Meadowood is competing in round-robin groups for a spot in Sunday's Solinco USTA Wild Card Shootout, a tiebreaker tournament used to determine the winner. The shootout champion will receive a wild card into a future USTA Pro Circuit tournament.
The three-day tournament concludes on Sunday, with matches beginning at 8 a.m.
