Bears Work Overtime For Pair Of Wins
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - A 17-7 win over Loyola Marymount in morning play gave way to a nail-biter against Pacific in the evening but the No. 4-ranked Cal men's water polo team had enough left in the tank to weather a furious comeback and score an 11-10 double-overtime victory over the No. 5 Tigers and advance to the semifinals at the Kap7 SoCal Invitational hosted by Pepperdine and LMU.
With the wins, Cal (14-2) moves on to a Sunday morning semifinal against No. 1 UCLA in Malibu. The Bears and Bruins will meet for the second time this season, having clashed in a NorCal Invitational semifinal that UCLA won 8-6 on Sept. 20. Sunday's match will begin at 10:40 a.m. and the winner will face either No. 2 seed Stanford or No. 3 seed USC (the Trojans are ranked No. 2 and Cardinal No. 3) for the tournament championship at 5:20 p.m.
Cal 11, Pacific 10 (2 OT)
After needing two overtimes to settle their first meeting this season, it wasn't a surprise that the Bears and Tigers needed extra time again Saturday with a spot in the semifinals on the line. And, just like he did the first time, freshman Johnny Hooper came up with a huge overtime goal, scoring with 13 seconds left to give Cal the win.
That the teams needed overtime at all was a testament to Pacific's resillience. Goals by Conor Neumann and Hooper to start the fourth period put Cal ahead 9-4 with 7:04 to play but the Tigers weren't going away easily, responding with five unanswered goals and eventually tying the score on a goal by Ben Stevenson with 1:50 to play.
Once in overtime, the teams traded rapid-fire goals to stay tied through one extra period. Stevenson put Pacific in front briefly but it took just 24 seconds for the Bears to equalize as Neumann found the net to tie it at 10.
Neither team managed to score early in the second OT period, but a steal by goalkeeper Lazar Andric gave the Bears possession with 23 seconds left. Cal coach Kirk Everist called time out to draw up a play and Hooper made it count, beating goalkeeper Brady Moore to put Cal ahead. Aleksandar Petrovic tried a last-ditch shot for the Tigers but missed the cage and Cal walked out with the win.
Neumann, Hooper and Pedro Stellet each scored two goals to lead the Bears offensively and Andric made a major impact in goal with 19 saves.
Cal 17, Loyola Marymount 7
An already scorching-hot morning in Los Angeles couldn't slow the Bears as a strong third period put some distance between the Bears and host Lions as Cal won its first match comfortably at Burns Aquatics Center.
Matched up against the tournament hosts in its first game, Cal didn't take long to build a lead. Goals by Stellet and Colin Mulcahy put the Bears ahead and Odysseas Masmanidis added two more before the first period was over to give Cal a 4-2 lead. Luca Cupido scored the first goal in the second period to push the lead to three and, after LMU scored two goals of its own to pull within one, Neumann added two goals in the final 30 seconds of the period to leave the Bears up 8-5 at halftime.
Cal made its biggest offensive mark in the third period, finding the net seven times to take control. Mulcahy added two more goals, Cupido also scored twice and Hooper tallied three goals to make the score 14-7 at the end of three. Vassilis Tzavaras added two goals and Chandler Jarrels scored once in the fourth to round out the scoring.
Andric started in goal for the Bears and made four saves to go along with four steals. Peter O'Laughlin took over in the fourth and stopped five shots without allowing a goal. Defender Thomas Agramonte had a strong game with four assists and three steals.
