Three Bears Selected For Team USA Camp
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Current Cal players Jazmyn Jackson and Annie Aldrete joined former Bears star Valerie Arioto as three of the 43 players invited Thursday to compete at the 2016 USA Softball Women's National Team selection camp in January in Irvine, Calif.
All three players boast already impressive resumes when it comes to competing for Team USA. Arioto (2008-12) and Aldrete (currently a junior) each competed for the USA National Team throughout the summer of 2015 and helped Team USA win gold at the World Cup of Softball and Japan Cup as well as winning silver at the Pan Am Games. Aldrete joins the Bears for her first season in 2015 after transferring from Tennessee while Arioto has remained a mainstay for her country's national team since leaving Berkeley as one of the program's greatest players.
Jackson also competed for Team USA over the summer, earning a spot on the USA Junior National Team and helping it win gold at the World Baseball Softball Confederation Junior Women's World Championship in Oklahoma City. Jackson, who is a returning sophomore this season, hit.381 with five extra-base hits, nine RBI and 14 runs scored at the tournament. The native of San Jose, Calif. was a top 10 finalist for NFCA Freshman of the Year honors in 2015 and hit .446 to put herself second on Cal's single-season batting average list in her first year as a Golden Bear.
The trio is part of a 43-player pool that will convene at Bill Barber Park in Irvine from Jan. 2-8. They'll compete for spots on a 17-player roster that travel in the summer of 2016 to the World Cup of Softball XI, the XV World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Women's World Championship in Surrey, B.C., Canada and the Japan Cup.
Additional athletes may be invited to the camp at a later date. To see the entire list of athletes invited to camp, click here.
