Bears Fall In Three Sets To No. 4 Washington

BERKELEY – Senior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise recorded 16 kills at a .650 hitting percentage but the Cal volleyball team fell to No. 4 Washington on Friday night, 25-15, 30-28 ,25-16 at Haas Pavilion.

Junior libero Maddy Kerr had 16 digs for the Bears (7-13, 1-8 Pac-12), who had five set points in the second set but were unable to close it out.

Cal erased a 12-7 deficit to come back in the second set. After the Huskies led 13-9, the Bears scored three points in a row on kills by sophomore Antzela Dempi and senior Lara Vukasovic and an ace by junior setter Alyssa Jensen. With the score tied at 16-16, Cal went in front for the first time on kills by Schonewise and sophomore outside hitter Christine Alftin. The Bears extended their advantage to three points and reached set point at 24-21, but the Huskies came back to tie it at 24-24.

Cal then scored the next point the next three times it was tied, but each time Washington knotted the score again. The Huskies finally closed out the set on back-to-back kills with the score tied at 28-28.

The Bears return to action Sunday when they host Washington State at 11 a.m. at Haas Pavilion. The match will air on the Pac-12 Networks.
