Crossbar Foils No. 23 Cal?s Upset Plans
TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 23 California hit the woodwork twice for the second consecutive game but ultimately fell victim to a 1-0 shutout against No. 17 Arizona at Mulcahy Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.
Juniors Emma Fletcher and Kelly Fitzgerald both hit the crossbar in the 61st and 80th minutes, respectively, but it was a 71st minute goal by Arizona's Hannah Stevens that was the difference Friday in what was Cal's (6-3-2, 0-2-0 Pac-12) fourth road game against a top 25 opponent so far this season.
Arizona (8-1-1, 2-0-0 Pac-12) earned the win with the goal at 70:49 that was scored when Hayley Estopare headed a throw-in straight to Stevens for the chance to finish.
The Bears employed a 4-4-2 lineup for the first time this season while also giving Haley Lukas her first start of the year at left back. The result saw the Bears earn a 20-13 edge in shots, marking the second-most shot attempts by the Bears this season.
Senior Samantha Witteman, making the start in midfield, had a game-high three shots on goal out of her five attempts. Fitzgerald and Arielle Ship both had two on frame, including one by Ship in the final minutes that was saved in traffic by the Arizona goalkeeper.
Cal finished the game with an 8-5 edge in shots on goal and 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore Emily Boyd finished the game with four saves, two coming in each half.
California takes the short trip to Tempe for a Sunday afternoon game against Arizona State to conclude a five-game road trip.
