Bears Fall To No. 14 Arizona In Four Sets
TUCSON, Ariz. – Junior libero Maddy Kerr had a season-high 27 digs but the Cal volleyball team fell to No. 14 Arizona on Friday night, 22-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-15.
Junior middle blocker Jenelle Jordan led the Bears (6-8, 0-3 Pac-12) with 11 kills while senior opposite hitter Lara Vukasovic added 10 kills and two blocks. Senior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise had nine kills and four blocks for the Bears.
The Bears got off to a scorching start, jumping out to an 11-7 lead in the first set. The Wildcats came back to tie it at 13-13, but Cal went back in front 16-13. The Bears extended their advantage to 20-15 on a service ace by sophomore Christine Alftin, and maintained their lead at 24-19. After Arizona scored three points in a row to cut it to 24-22, the Bears closed out the set on a service error by the Wildcats.
Cal led for most of the second set, but Arizona took its first lead at 17-16. The Bears went back in front 19-18 after a kill by Vukasovic and extended to 21-19 on a block by Vukasovic and Schonewise. Arizona then scored the final six points of the set to even the match.
After the teams traded a point each to begin the third set, the Wildcats scored eight points in a row to take command. But Cal battled back, trimming a 12-4 deficit to 18-15. That's the closes the Bears could get in the third set.
Cal trailed just 9-8 in the fourth set before Arizona scored six points in a row to assume control. The Bears cut it to 17-12 on a kill by Schonewise, but the Wildcats went on to close it out.
Cal returns to action Sunday at No. 6 Arizona State at 1:30 p.m. The match will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
