Bears Fall To No. 6 Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. – Senior Lara Vukasovic recorded nine kills and two blocks but the Cal volleyball team fell to No. 6 Arizona State on Sunday, 25-17, 25-19, 25-19.

Junior Jenelle Jordan added eight kills and five blocks and junior Maddy Kerr had a team-high 11 digs.

The Bears (6-9, 0-4 Pac-12) were still close midway through the first set after an Arizona State hitting error cut the Sun Devils' lead to 15-12. But ASU scored six straight points to take command.

Cal got off to a stronger start in the second set, leading 8-6 after a kill by senior Lillian Schonewise. But the Sun Devils scored 10 of the next 11 points to establish a commanding lead. The Bears fought back to trim the deficit to 21-19 before the Sun Devils closed it out.

Arizona St. got off to a blistering start to the third set, leading 9-3 and 13-6. Cal continued to fight, however, slicing into the lead to cut it to 21-18. The Sun Devils ultimately were able to finish off the set to win the match.

Sophomore Christine Alftin and freshman Carmen Annevelink each added five kills for the Bears. Alftin also had five digs.

The Bears return home to take on No. 22 Oregon on Friday at 8 p.m. The match will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
