Bears Fall In Four Sets To No. 19 Arizona
BERKELEY – Senior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise had 14 kills and a season-high eight blocks but the Cal volleyball team fell to No. 19 Arizona on Sunday, 25-21, 25-14, 19-25, 25-16 at Haas Pavilion.
Senior opposite hitter Lara Vukasovic added seven kills and two blocks and freshman outside hitter Carmen Annevelink also had seven kills for the Bears (9-14, 3-9 Pac-12), who had won three of their previous four matches.
Junior libero Maddy Kerr led Cal's defensive effort with 15 digs.
The Bears started the match strongly, establishing a 10-7 lead in the first set after a kill by Vukasovic. The Wildcats came back to tie it up but Cal again went back in front 15-13 on a kill by freshman outside hitter Belen Castillo. Arizona took its first lead at 18-17 but the Bears knotted it back up at 19-19. But the Wildcats then scored three in a row to take command of the set.
Arizona jumped on the Bears from the outset of the second set, establishing leads of 5-0 and 10-1. But Cal kept fighting, and after a kill by Schonewise they had the deficit down to 12-9. The Bears were still within three at 16-13, but the Wildcats then pulled away to win the set comfortably.
The beginning of the third set was marked by a couple of wild swings of momentum. The Bears responded to the two-set deficit by racing out to a 5-0 lead, aided by a kill and two blocks from Schonewise. But Arizona then scored six points in a row themselves to surge in front. With the score tied 8-8, Schonwise had a kill and a block and Annevelink also added a kill as Cal took an 11-8 lead.
The Bears opened up breathing room in the third set by later scoring five points in a row again, two coming on kills by reserve senior outside hitter Nikki Gombar while Vukasovic also added a kill and a block. Amazingly, the Wildcats also ran off five consecutive points again, to shave the Bears' 19-11 edge to 19-16. But Cal didn't let Arizona get any closer and forced the fourth set.
The Bears fell behind 8-2 in the fourth. They had a run of four consecutive points to trim the Wildcats' advantage to 13-9, but that was as close as they would get the remainder of the match.
During the match, Kerr moved into fifth place on Cal's all-time digs list. She now has 1,250 for her career.
The Bears begin a four-match road trip Friday at Oregon State at 7 p.m.
