STANFORD – The Cal volleyball team played No. 6 Stanford tough for the second time this season but ultimately fell 25-22, 18-25, 25-13, 25-23 at Maples Pavilion on Wednesday.

Senior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise continued her ridiculous assault on opposing defenses with a season-high 20 kills at a blistering .576 hitting percentage while sophomore outside hitter Christine Alftin added 16 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Antzela Dempi registered a career-high 11 kills.

The Bears (9-21, 3-16 Pac-12) hit a more-than-respectable .276 for the match, including a .424 mark in the first set that had them believing they would get the early edge. And after a Schonewise kill, Cal led 16-13. The Cardinal then scored three in a row to tie it up, and the teams traded points until Stanford three of the next four to assume a 22-19 advantage. The Cardinal was able to maintain that edge and close out the set.

It looked as though Stanford had seized the momentum as it grabbed an 11-7 lead to start the second set, but the Bears then went on a spectacular 13-2 run to lead 20-13. The Cardinal was able to trim the deficit to four before Cal scored the final three points of the set to even the match.

Stanford won the third set convincingly and began to open up breathing room in the fourth set before the Bears came storming back. The Cardinal established a 14-9 lead and still led 16-12 when Cal reeled off four consecutive points to tie it at 16-16. Stanford went back out in front again 19-17 but the Bears once again evened the score on a kill by Schonewise and an ace by freshman Mackenzie Albrecht.

Stanford eventually had three match points at 24-21, but a ball handling error and hitting error allowed Cal to cut it to 24-23 and force the Cardinal to call timeout. Stanford was able to take the next point to finish off the match.

Cal and Stanford met to open the Pac-12 season on Sept. 22 at Haas Pavilion and the Bears also lost that match in four sets, including two off the set losses by two points each.

Wednesday marked the seventh time this season Schonewise had hit at least .500 in a match. She raised her hitting percentage to .382 for the season..

Cal libero Maddy Kerr finished with 18 digs while Albrecht had a career-high 13 digs. Junior setter Alyssa Jensen registered 50 assists, the sixth time this season she's reached the 50-assist mark.

The Bears close out the 2015 season Friday at No. 1 USC at 4 p.m. The match will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
