Bears End No. 3 Stanford?s Winning Streak
STANFORD, Calif. – Sophomore defender Annia Mejia scored her first career goal in the 77th minute as No. 20 California earned a 1-1 draw at No. 3 Stanford, ending the Cardinal's 10-game winning streak in the process.
It was the second consecutive match between the two Bay Area rivals to go to overtime at Cagan Stadium with the two teams exploding with offensive opportunities in the final 15 minutes of regulation. Mejia put the Bears ahead at 76:19 after tapping it in on the back post after a corner kick, and the Cardinal equalized just three minutes later at 79:31 with a Alana Cook goal that also came off of a corner kick.
The draw moves California to 13-5-3 on the year and 6-4-1 in conference play to finish the regular season tied for fourth in the Pac-12 standings. Stanford failed to pick up the full three points for just the first time this conference season and moves to 16-2-1 (10-0-1 Pac-12).
“(After the goal) I saw all of my teammates running at me, and it was just a surreal moment,” Mejia said of her 77th minute goal to put the Bears ahead. “Cel B pulled me over and told me, 'Annia you scored!', and that is when it hit me with the excitement. A win could have been better, but a tie is what we needed for us to get ranked higher in the RPI. Hopefully we proved ourselves that we deserve a national seed. From now on it's one game at a time.”
Mejia's classmate Emily Boyd also had a spectacular game for the Bears as the sophomore goalkeeper collected a career-high 10 saves in the game, surpassing her previous best of seven saves with a collection of big plays against the dangerous Stanford attack.
“I start every game with the mindset that if we want to win, I have to let in no goals,” Boyd said of her mentality in an All-Pac-12 level sophomore season that has seen her set the Cal record for single-season shutouts in addition to earning a new career-high in saves Friday. “As a team, we have been really successful when our backline is strong and doesn't let shots in. But it starts from the front. When I can tell my team is playing their hearts out in front of me, it makes me even more driven to keep the ball out of the net.”
The draw is just the fifth in the storied 35-game history between Cal and Stanford and the first draw since the teams played a 1-1 stalemate at Cagan Stadium in 2007.
The NCAA Selection Show is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 9 at 1:30 p.m. PT. If the Bears are selected to host, they will play a game at Edwards Stadium between November 13-15.
