Bears Edged In Battle Of Top Teams
BERKELEY - A flurry of goals in the fourth period from visiting Pacific erased a three-goal lead for the Cal men's water polo team and the Bears couldn't recover in the closing seconds as they dropped an 11-10 decision to the Tigers at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Luca Cupido led Cal (19-5, 5-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) with four goals. Odysseas Masmanidis scored twice and Farrel South, Thomas Carroll, Colin Mulcahy and Conor Neumann each added a goal apiece. Devon Thumwood and Alex Obert each scored three times for Pacific (21-3, 7-1), which entered the match tied in the national rankings at No. 2 with the Bears.
Cal led 5-4 at halftime but managed to extend the lead in the third thanks to a strong period at both ends of the pool. A penalty shot by Mulcahy and goals by South and Carroll gave the Bears the advantage but it was a series of excellent saves by Lazar Andric that helped the offense stand up as the junior from Montenegro turned away a last-ditch effort at the buzzer to keep Cal ahead 8-5 heading to the final period.
Pacific had plenty left for a comeback, and a goal by Krisztian Laczkovics got the Tigers started on the road back. Thumwood caromed a shot off the crossbar and in for another goal and Alex Obert tied the game at 8 after a goal by Masmanidis was disallowed due to an offensive foul. A goal by Aleksandar Petrovic with 2:48 put Pacific ahead with 2:48 remaining but Cupido tied the score again with 1:17 left when he swam right down the middle, took a pass and fired past Brady Moore to make it 9-9.
Obert put the Tigers back in front with 1:05 left to make it 10-9 and, after a Cal shot sailed high on the Bears' next possession, Casey Fleming added an insurance goal for Pacific to make it 11-9 with 19 seconds left. Cupido scored two seconds later to close the gap but the Tigers played keep-away to run the clock out and pick up the win. With the result, Cal is now 2-1 against Pacific this season with a pair of double overtime wins already to its credit.
"I think we had a couple offensive opportunities early (in the fourth)," Cal head coach Kirk Everist said. "We had a counter-attack to go up by four, we had a shot out of two meters that was an offensive (foul) and we had a couple other shots that easily could've given us a little bit of momentum early in the fourth quarter and we didn't put them away. UOP scored right away on us, got that quick six on five and we just weren't putting the ball in the back of the net. It came down to defense at the end, not executing on the defensive end."
Saturday's game served as Senior Day for the Bears and Mulcahy, Thomas Agramonte, Andrew Schnugg, Peter O'Laughlin and student assistant Phil Cozens, Jr. were honored in a pre-match ceremony. The Bears return to Spieker for their 2015 regular season home finale on Sunday when they host Pepperdine at noon.
