Cal In The NFL ? Week 16 Wrap
BERKELEY – A total of 12 former Cal football players are on teams that have clinched spots in the NFL Playoffs at the conclusion of Week 16 action most recently when C.J. Anderson and his Denver squad earned a spot in the playoffs after a 17-14 win over Cincinnati on Monday Night Football. Anderson made a major contribution to the Broncos' playoff clinching victory with nine rushes for a game-high 73 yards including a 39-yard touchdown run that was the game's longest play from scrimmage.
DeSean Jackson along with his former Cal teammates Nick Sundberg and Brian de la Puente are members of a Washington team that clinched the NFC East title with a victory at Philadelphia on Saturday.
The foursome that earned playoff spots in Week 16 joined six other players that are on rosters of teams that had earlier sewed up playoff spots in Chris Harper (New England), Marvin Jones (Cincinnati), Marshawn Lynch (Seattle), Brandon Mebane (Seattle), Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay) and Richard Rodgers (Green Bay).
New England (AFC East) and Cincinnati (AFC North) have already clinched division titles along with Washington, while Green Bay (NFC North) and Denver (AFC West). The Packers and Broncos can both capture their division titles with Week 17 home wins over Minnesota and San Diego. Denver would also win the AFC West if Kansas City loses to Oakland in a Week 17 contest.
Cal also has a pair of former players in Ron Rivera (head coach) and Richard Rodgers Sr. (assistant defensive backs coach) on the coaching staff of a Carolina team that has clinched the NFC South title and have the best record in the NFL at 14-1. Carolina team that had begun the campaign with a 14-0 mark to tie for the fourth-best start in NFL history before falling 20-13 at Atlanta on Sunday.
A complete list of the 28 former Cal players currently on active NFL rosters plus Rivera and his fellow former Golden Bear player and assistant secondary coach Richard Rodgers Sr., are listed below along with links to their NFL.com bios, notes on their performances in Week 12 of the 2015 NFL campaign, season notes and stats. Cal began the 2015 season ranked fourth among Pac-12 schools and tied for 16th nationally for most active players on NFL rosters.
