Cal Rewrites Record Book in 117-99 Rout of Sac State

BERKELEY – Facing a loss against unranked Saint Mary's on Friday and out of the Cal Classic championship game for the first time in 32 tournaments, head coach Lindsay Gottlieb was concerned with just one thing when it came to her young squad.

"What I'm most concerned about is how we respond," Gottlieb said after yesterday's loss. "I'm much more concerned with how we carry ourselves and what we do going forward. You don't want to have to lose a game to learn those lessons but if you do and you do learn those lessons you're better off for it."

In less than 24 hours, the Bears showed that their response was a positive one as No. 18/17 Cal rewrote the program record books in a 117-99 rout of Sacramento State in the Cal Classic consolation game Sunday in Haas Pavilion. Cal's 117 points was a new program-record, topping the previous record of 115, which stood since 1989. The Bears also set program records for single-game field goal percentage (69.3 percent) and made field goals (52), records as old as 1979.

Golden Bear individuals also enjoyed career-days, highlighted by freshman Kristine Anigwe's 43 points (18-24), the most of any player in the NCAA this season. Anigwe logged her second consecutive double-double and third in five games with a career-high 13 rebounds.

Sophomore Mikayla Cowling was just one rebound shy of a triple-double, finishing with 11 points (5-7), 10 assists and nine rebounds. Three other players also scored in double figures – junior Courtney Range (19 points, 9-10 and freshmen Asha Thomas (11, 4-5) and MaAne Mosley (10, 5-8).

Cal cruised to the win with two 34-point quarters, leading 68-49 at halftime as the Hornets high-intensity offense forced 103 shots from the floor between the two teams in the first half. At the break, Anigwe had already matched her career-high 27, set the day before, and was two rebounds shy of her double-double. Range was also in the double-digits with 15 points plus five rebounds.

In the second half, the Hornets looked to improve their accuracy from deep after shooting 20 percent from beyond the arc with just 8-40 three-pointers in the first two quarters. While Sacramento State's numbers improved to 11-39 from downtown, the 28 percent shooting clip wasn't enough to combat Cal's near-66 percent shooting from the floor and Cal won the third quarter 30-26 to keep its lead.

The Hornets edged the Bears 24-19 in the final 10 minutes but couldn't overcome the 18-point deficit.

Saint Mary's won the Cal Classic, defeating Villanova 67-60 in Sunday's championship game.
