Cal Leaves No Doubt In 82-58 Thrashing of Washington
BERKELEY - The game was never in doubt as California never trailed en route to a commanding 82-58 win over Washington in a critical Pac-12 matchup Saturday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.
Reshanda Gray had her seventh double-double of the season for the Bears (15-5, 7-2 Pac-12) with 27 points and 14 rebounds, and Mercedes Jefflo added a career-high 19 points to give Cal redemption for a 79-77 loss to the Huskies (16-5, 5-4) in Seattle three weeks ago.
The Bears led by as many as 34 points to secure a two-game lead over the Huskies for fourth in the Pac-12 standings as teams reach the mid-point of the conference season. The 24-point victory is Cal's largest in a conference game since the Bears defeated, coincidentally, Washington in the 2012-13 regular season finale 78-50.
Courtney Range added 10 points for Cal while Brittany Boyd added nine points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in 25 minutes of action.
Washington was led by Jazmine Davis's 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting. The high-powered Huskies were held to under 60 points for just the third time this season.
The victory also ends Cal's two-game slide against Washington, improving Lindsay Gottlieb to 4-2 against the Huskies.
As a team, California shot 50% from the field while limiting the Huskies to just 34.5%. Even more important for Lindsay Gottlieb's team, though, is that Cal ended its five-game stretch of not out-rebounding their opponents by gaining a 42-30 rebounding advantage Saturday.
Cal returns to action Monday at 5 p.m. when the Bears host Washington State. All youth 18 and under will be admitted for free, and the game will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks.
