STANFORD – In just his fourth collegiate game, Cal freshman catcher Brett Cumberland had a phenomenal display of power, hitting a grand slam in the first inning and a three-run homer in fourth inning to help propel the Golden Bears (2-2) to a 11-1 win over Bay Area rival Stanford (1-3) at Sunken Diamond.

Freshman left-hander Matt Ladrech was also impressive, facing Stanford in his first collegiate start, throwing 7.0 innings with only three hits, no runs, two walks and four strikeouts in the win.

"It was big for us to get that type of great effort from two of our freshmen," said Cal coach David Esquer. "Cumberland and Ladrech were the difference for us today and it was just what we needed from both of them. Ladrech got stronger as the game went on, and I don't think I have ever seen such a hitting performance from a freshman in only his fourth game."

The Bears finished with nine hits, includin two hits apiece from senior first baseman Chris Paul (2-for-5, double, triple, RBI) and sophomore designated hitter Lucas Erceg (2-for-3). Freshman shortstop Preston Grand Pre also hit a double for Cal.

The Bears next host 2014 College World Series participant UC Irvine in a four-game series, beginning Friday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
