Cal Wins Game Two of Doubleheader, 4-1
BERKELEY – The Cal baseball team capped off a stellar day by winning the second game of a doubleheader, 4-1, over UC Irvine (0-6) Saturday at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears received outstanding pitching from freshmen right-handers Jeff Bain and Eric Martinez, who combined for 14 strikeouts. In his first collegiate start, Bain went 5.2 innings with three hits, one run, no walks and six strikeouts. As good as Bain was, Martinez was even more spectacular, earning his first save by throwing 3.1 innings with only one hit and eight strikeouts, striking out eight of the 11 batters he faced.
In game one. Cal pounded out 16 hits, including a pair of home runs by Erceg for a 10-3 win over the Anteaters.
Erceg finished the game 4-for-4 with two RBI. Junior right fielder Devin Pearson had two spectacular catches during the game and hit a solo home run in the first inning. Senior Chris Paul was 2-for-4 and had a two-run homer in the fifth inning.
