Boyd Etches Name in Cal History Book in 57-54 Win Over WSU
BERKELEY - Freshman Mikayla Cowling led the Bears with 15 points and senior Brittany Boyd became Cal's all-time assists leader after registering six assists as California (16-5, 8-2 Pac-12) held on to win its fifth-consecutive Pac-12 game with a 57-54 win against Washington State (13-8, 4-6 Pac-12) on Monday evening at Haas Pavilion.
Boyd broke the 31-year old assists record with 14:32 remaining in the first half when she fed Courtney Range for a layup to put the Bears ahead 13-6. Boyd ended the night with 671 career assists, passing Karen Smith's previous top mark of 667 assists set from 1981-84.
Classmate Reshanda Gray continues to move up the Cal all-time scoring list after scoring nine points Monday to also pass Karen Smith for No. 9 on the list with 1,562 career points.
The win makes it four consecutive seasons that Cal has swept the regular season meetings between the two teams.
Cal entered the halftime break with a 12-point advantage before the Cougars went on the attack in the second frame. The Bears earned its big lead by limiting Washington State to just 19 points in the opening 20 minutes on a 7-of-32 (21.9%) shooting effort - simultaneously the lowest halftime score that the Cougars have mustered this season and the best defensive field goal percentage effort the Bears put forth in a single-half this season.
However, WSU evened the score at 52-52 with 5:46 minutes left in regulation on the heels of Lia Galdeira's scorching second half. Galdeira, the game's high-scorer with 29 points, scored 18 in the second half on an 8-of-14 effort from the field after hitting just five of her 14 attempts in the first half.
Washington State eventually claimed just its second lead of the night, 54-52, when Dawnyelle Awa scored on a layup with 5:09 remaining in the game, but the Golden Bear defense once again put the clamps down and did not allow the Cougars to score a single point the rest of the way en route to the nail-biting 57-54 victory.
Fittingly, Boyd scored the final points of the game with two free throws with 12 seconds remaining, and Galdeira's two three-point attempts in the last eight seconds were off frame.
The Bears head to Arizona for a pair of road games against Arizona and No. 10 Arizona State. Cal will face off against the Wildcats on Friday, Feb. 6, before heading to Tempe to take on the Sun Devils on Sunday, Feb. 8, for an ESPNU contest. Sunday's game will be Cal's second this season against an AP Top 10 team.
