Cal Wins Second Game Over No. 8 Ducks, 6-2
BERKELEY - Bolstered by the pitching of junior right-hander Ryan Mason, Cal baseball won the second straight night over No. 8 Oregon, topping the Ducks, 6-2, Saturday evening at Evans Diamond. Mason threw 8.0 innings with five hits, two runs, one earned run, two walks and four strikeouts to improve his record to 3-0.
On Friday night, the Bears defeated highly-ranked Oregon, 9-3. Cal had an impressive crowd of 1,214 on hand for Saturday's big win.
Cal (15-3, 2-0) also had two hits apiece from Aaron Knapp, Brett Cumberland (RBI), Chris Paul (double, RBI) and Preston Grand Pre (RBI); and took advantage of some sloppy fielding by the Ducks, who finished with three errors. With the win, the Bears have now won 10 games in a row and 14 of their last 15 contests.
"It was a great performance by Mason, he is a fierce competitior," said Cal coach David Esquer. "It was also a great crowd at Evans Diamond with electricity in the air. The key to our success is that we have been pitching well and playing good defense. We have come out to play every day."
The Bears will attempt to sweep the series over Oregon as the two teams play Game Three Sunday, March 15 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
