Cal Wins Over Kansas State, 6-2
BERKELEY – Cal baseball had another solid day of pitching and hitting as the Golden Bears defeated Kansas State, 6-2, to win the second game of the series Sunday at Evans Diamond. Junior right-hander Ryan Mason (2-0) picked up his second win of the year, going 7.0 innings with five hits, one run, one walk and one strikeout. Offensively, Cal was paced by sophomore center fielder Aaron Knapp, who was 3-for-3 with an RBI, and junior right fielder Devin Pearson, who finished 2-for-3 with a double and a team-high three RBI.
With the win, the Bears improved to 7-3 on the season and the Wildcats dropped to 4-6. Cal had won the first game of the series, 4-2, Saturday night. The final game of the series will be Monday, March 2 at 10 a.m. at Evans Diamond
Cal never trailed in Sunday's contest, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first four innings. The Bears scored a run in the first inning off of Wildcat starter Colton Kalmus (0-1, 3.1 innings, four hits, four runs, three earned runs, two walks, one strikeout) on an RBI single by freshman catcher Brett Cumberland. Cal added another run in the second inning on an RBI single to center field by Pearson.
The Bears plated three runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Knapp and a two-run double to left center fielder by Pearson. Cal added a final insurance run in the seventh inning on a Kansas State wild pitch.
Senior left-hander Chris Muse-Fisher earned his second save of the season, coming in in the ninth inning and getting out of a bases loaded jam by striking out Max Brown to end the game.
