Bears Pound Huskies, 12-2, to Sweep Series
SEATTLE, WASH. - Led by big offensive days from sophomore Lucas Erceg and junior Mitchell Kranson, Cal completed a sweep over Washington with a 12-2 victory over the Huskies Sunday at Husky Ballpark. The Golden Bears also got a solid outing from freshman left-hander Matt Ladrech as David Esquer's squad improved to 18-5 overall and 5-1 in the Pac-12 Conference.
Cal had defeated UW 3-2 on both Friday and Saturday behind eighth inning homers by Erceg. On Sunday, he started the day's scoring by hitting a two-run homer in the first inning. Erceg went on to go 3-for-6 with two doubles, including a two-run double in the fifth inning. He finished the series 6-for-13 with two doubles, three home runs, six RBI and 17 total bases.
Kranson was also swinging a hot bat on Sunday for the Bears, going 4-for-5 with a double and RBI. Ladrech improved his record to 4-2 by going 7.0 innings with eight hits, one earned run, one walk and three strikeouts.
With the victory, Cal is off to its best league start since going 5-1 during its 2011 College World Series season.
Besides Erceg and Kranson, freshman shortstop Preston Grand Pre was 3-for-5; and Aaron Knapp, Brett Cumberland and Brian Celsi had two hits apiece. Freshman catcher Cumberland hit his fourth home run of the season with a solo shot in the seventh inning.
"It was another solid outing by our starting pitching," said Esquer. "Matt Ladrech was good for us again today. Lucas Erceg obviously had a great weekend and Mitchell Kranson had a big day today. We will take the sweep, but we know that every weekend will be a dogfight in this league."
The Bears will next travel to Fresno State for a non-league game on Wednesday, March 25 at 6:35 p.m. at Beiden Field. Cal will then continue with Pac-12 play, traveling to Utah for a three-game series beginning Friday, March 27 at 6 p.m. MT in Salt Lake City. All three games of the Cal-Utah series will be shown on the Pac-12 Networks.
