Cal Falls to Cornell, 23-6
BERKELEY – Trailing 9-4, California was within reach of Cornell at halftime on Sunday at Memorial Stadium. The Golden Bears outshot the Big Red, 13-12, in the first 30 minutes, and Cal freshman
Meredith Haggerty scored the last goal of the first half with 25 seconds left on the clock.
But Cornell took control in the second half, outshooting Cal, 16-4, and the Bears wound up losing, 23-6. Cal's record fell to 2-8 after the nonconference game, while Cornell improved to 7-2.
Haggerty and senior Sasha Anielski led Cal with two goals apiece, while freshman Parker Garrett and sophomore Caroline Schlegel scored one each.
Of Cal's first-half play, Cal head coach Brooke Eubanks said, “It really centers on confidence, believing in their skills and relying on what their strengths are. You saw people dodging, going hard to goal, and if it wasn't there, moving the ball and finding the open person. For us, it's more about being confident and relying on what we're good at.”
She added, “There are moments of greatness. The biggest thing for us is we need to keep hammering in the fundamentals, and that's not going to change overnight. If we can commit to it and stick with it, we'll see some big games in the long run.”
The first-year head coach lauded Haggerty, who now has six goals this season.
“She is definitely coming into her own a little bit,” Eubanks said. “She's been pushing it through the midfield. She took a couple 1v1 drives. She's aggressive towards the goal. If we can get more of that out of her for the future, it's going to mean good things for us.”
Cal returns to MPSF action when the Bears play at Oregon on Sunday, April 5, in a game broadcast by the Pac-12 Networks.
