Cal Baseball Shuts Out USF, 11-0
BERKELEY - Highlighted by a three-run homer by senior first baseman Chris Paul in the first inning, Cal baseball shut out San Francisco, 11-0, Wednesday evening at Evans Diamond. With the victory, the Golden Bears improved to 9-3 on the season and have now won eight of their last nine games.
Freshman right-hander Jeff Bain (2-0) earned his second win of the season, going 6.0 innings with one walk and four strikeouts.
Cal didn't waste any time getting to Dons starter Sheldon Lee in the first inning. Sophomore third baseman Lucas Erceg had a two-out double down the left field line, freshman catcher Brett Cumberland was hit by a Lee pitch, and then Paul hit the Bears' video scoreboard in left-center field with his second home run of the season.
Besides Paul's three-run homer, other top hitters for Cal were junior second baseman Max Dutto, who had a two-run homer to right field in the seventh inning, and sophomore center fielder Aaron Knapp, who was 2-for-4 with a double.
Freshman shortstop Preston Grand Pre also double for the Bears. Erceg was the last of four pitchers for Cal in the evening, striking out the side in the top of the ninth.
The Bears next host Chicago State in a three-game series beginning Friday, March 7 at 7 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
